Different Smells That Mean Your Car Is in Trouble

There are certain smells associated with car engines in danger of breaking down. Sweet syrup, gasoline, and burned rubber could all signal a serious problem with your car. It is essential that you not ignore these different smells:

Sweet Syrup

A syrupy smell indicates that you may have a coolant leak. If your car is leaking coolant—from a radiator hose or heater core—then have it inspected right away. Leaking coolant can cause your car to overheat, especially in Arizona, which could leave you stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

Burning Carpet

Burning carpet is a sign that your brake pads may be in danger. You may smell burning carpet after riding your brakes down a long hill, but this smell may also indicate a dragging brake. You may also have accidentally left on your handbrake, or emergency brake. Ensure that your handbrake is released and examine your brakes. The hottest brake is likely the one in danger.

Gasoline

You may smell traces of gasoline after you fill up your gas tank. However, a consistent gasoline smell could mean that your car has a gas leak. This smell should never be ignored, because a gas leak could become a fire hazard. See a qualified mechanic right away, and carry a fire extinguisher in your car.

Burned Rubber

Burned rubber is often a sign of loose belts and hoses that are resting on your hot engine. This smell should not be ignored. Examine your car’s engine after it has cooled. Check the belts and hoses for breaks, looseness, and leaks. If you cannot locate a loose belt, and the smell continues, then see a mechanic soon.
